Cozy Games Aren't Lazy Games

April 29, 2026 · Marta Lindqvist

People sometimes dismiss cozy games as things that play themselves. I get the instinct — no fail state, no timers, no boss fights. But spending time with Tiny Harbor Days reminded me how much craft goes into making something relaxing that still holds your attention.

The trick is a steady drip of small goals. In Tiny Harbor Days there's always one more building to unlock or one more villager request to clear, and each one is tiny enough to feel achievable but real enough to feel earned. That rhythm is genuinely hard to tune.

These games also fit the way most of us actually use phones — in gaps, distracted, half-watching something else. A cozy sim meets you there instead of demanding your full focus.

So no, I don't think cozy means lazy. It means designed for a different kind of attention, and the good ones nail it.
