Why Turn-Based RPGs Feel Right on a Phone
Turn-based combat used to feel old-fashioned. On a console with a controller, waiting your turn seemed slow next to flashier action games. On a phone, though, something flips. You're often playing in short bursts, and a game that pauses and waits for you is a gift.
Playing Emberfall Oaths this month reminded me of that. I could open it in line for coffee, take one turn, and lock my phone without missing anything. Try doing that with a twitchy action game and you'll die every time you look away.
The touch screen also suits menus. Tapping an ability from a clean grid is honestly nicer than scrolling through it with a stick. Good mobile RPGs lean into that instead of fighting it.
If you've written off the genre, give a modern indie one a shot. The best ones have figured out how to respect both your time and your thumbs.
