Learning to Read the Storm in Tideborn Command

April 6, 2026 · Marta Lindqvist

For my first two hours with Tideborn Command I kept losing ships. I'd send my whole fleet out to trade, a storm would roll in, and half of them wouldn't come back. I blamed the game. I was wrong.

The forecast panel is right there in the corner the whole time. It shows you which regions will get hit and roughly when. Once I actually started reading it instead of ignoring it, everything changed. I began staggering my routes, keeping a reserve fleet in port during rough windows.

That shift from reacting to planning is the whole game, really. The best strategy games teach you a way of thinking, and Tideborn does it through weather rather than a wall of tutorials.

My tip for new players: don't expand fast. Master one small cluster of islands and their weather patterns before you spread out. You'll lose way fewer ships and have a lot more fun.
